Living up to the stereotype that the organization is entirely made up of out of touch old people who prefer old-fashioned, sentimental movies to anything that might be construed as “bold” or “groundbreaking” or “experimental” (see the case of Oliver! vs. 2001: A Space Odyssey), the Academy has nominated Lincoln—a favourite among the 60+ crowd—12 times. Meanwhile, P.T. Anderson’s visionary The Master—a film which many critics compared favourably to 2001—only received two nominations, one for best actor (Joaquin Phoenix) and one for best supporting actress (Amy Adams).

The rest of the nominees are about what you’d expect, with a few exceptions. For instance, Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow, both considered locks for best director, didn’t get nominated. Instead, the Academy chose to nominate Austrian curmudgeon Michael Haneke for Amour and first-time director Benh Zeitlin for Beasts of the Southern Wild. These are pretty bold picks, so perhaps we shouldn’t write off the Academy as a bunch of out of touch senior citizens just yet…
