In real life, Ellen Page is a outspoken environmental activist. In The East, she plays an environmentalist who’s a little more than just “outspoken.” Indeed, in order to protect mother Earth, her character seems to have no problem whatsoever with adopting tactics more commonly associated with al-Qaeda.

As her work in Hard Candy and Super demonstrate, Page is very good at playing dangerous characters. Unfortunately, those movies have largely been ignored (despite their availability on Netflix), and most people continue to associate Page with her harmless, do-good characters Juno and Inception. Hopefully, The East—which has attracted considerable buzz at Sundance—will be the movie that reverses this situation.
