The fact that most of the great writers of the last century were also prodigious alcoholics has lead countless aspiring authors to ponder the question, “Could epic binge drinking be my ticket to literary greatness?”
The makers of Star Drunk set out to find a definitive answer to this question. Not only was the movie written under the influence, but all of the actors were required to drink on set. The result is, as you can imagine, fairly amusing.
Did the excessive alcohol consumption make the movie better than it otherwise would have been? Although the performances certainly have an odd, captivating, almost Kubrickian quality to them, the ultimate takeaway is unambiguous: To be the next Hemingway, you don’t necessarily have to drink like the next Hemingway.
