In Drive, he played a man of few words who’s preferred method of fleeing crime scenes was by car. Now in The Place Beyond the Pines, Ryan Gosling tackles a very different type of character: a man of few words who flees crime scenes by motorcycle.
But before you accuse Gosling of repeating himself, consider this: In Pines, Gosling sports a weird facial tattoo, and in Drive, his character’s face was 100% tattoo-free.
That seems to be the only major difference between the two characters, but it’s more than enough to do the trick. Watching the trailer, you can’t help but think, “Woah, Ryan Gosling has a weird facial tattoo…you never see characters with facial tattoos in movies…Ryan Gosling makes such brave choices…” Whereas if you were to watch the exact same trailer with the tattoo digitally removed, your reaction would probably be more along the lines of, “Hmm, a laconic loner who’s really good at escaping from the police…where have I seen this before? Oh, right, Drive, also staring Ryan Gosling.”
