Without Matt Damon in the lead, The Bourne Legacy promises to be a tough sell. Which could be why, for the newly released second trailer, Universal has edited together all the instances in which people in the movie say the name of Damon’s character, Jason Bourne.

“Jason Bourne was the tip of the iceberg!” says Edward Norton, apparently playing the Chris Cooper/Brian Cox/David Strathairn role of the crooked CIA overlord (although David Strathairn also appears in the movie). “Jason Bourne is in Manhattan,” someone tells Edward Norton over the phone a few seconds later, suggesting that the new movie takes place as the events of The Bourne Ultimatum are transpiring. “The FBI is investigating links between Treadstone and this man, Jason Bourne,” a news reporter says almost immediately afterwards as a picture of Matt Damon is flashed across the screen. “You think Jason Bourne was the whole story? There’s a lot more going on here,” says another, unidentified character. At times, it almost feels as if the writers are taking a page from Homer’s playbook on how to improve the Itchy and Scratchy Show: “Whenever Poochie isn’t on screen, all the other characters should be asking, ‘Where’s Poochie?'”

Oh, and the movie also features a character named Aaron Cross (played by Jeremy Renner), who the trailer also refers to from time to time.

The Bourne Legacy opens August 1.
