In the first teaser for P.T. Anderson’s The Master, we learned that the movie features a scene in which Joaquin Phoenix walks around on the beach, and…well, actually, that’s about it. The new teaser picks up where the old one left off, and it’s slightly more revealing. In this installment, we get our first glimpse of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s character, Lancaster Dodd, a self-described “writer, doctor, nuclear physicist, and theoretical philosopher.” The character has long been rumoured to be a thinly veiled version of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, and the resemblance between the two is fairly striking.
The Church of Scientology isn’t known for taking mockery lightly—indeed, after South Park aired its Scientology episode, the Church allegedly went through Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s garbage looking for incriminating material—so it will be interesting to see how this plays out when the movie is released in October.
Anderson has already screened the movie for his friend and Magnolia star Tom Cruise, easily the world’s most famous Scientologist (sorry John Travolta), who apparently “had issues with it.”
