Just about everyone who’s seen Flight seems to agree that it contains the most realistic and frightening plane crash sequence ever captured on film. For many viewers, the act of boarding a plane will never be the same again—sort of like how swimming in the ocean became a significantly more tension-fraught experience following the release of Jaws, or how taking a shower became kind of ominous and nerve-wracking in the the wake of Psycho.

What makes the sequence especially remarkable is that most of it seems to have been done on a computer. Yes, obviously Paramount didn’t shell out the money to crash a real plane. But did you know that the airport and rain were also fake? In fact, the only things that seem to be real are Denzel Washington and his seat belt.
