Because it’s release date was pushed back from December to May, many assumed the worst about The Great Gatsby, Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic.
The official reason for the delay was that the 3D effects and soundtrack still needed work. In the movie business, this is often code for “the movie is a complete disaster, and we’re doing everything we can to salvage something out of it.” (The fact that Luhrmann’s previous movie, Australia, was one of the biggest flops of all time was an additional cause of concern, as was the initial trailer, which looked more like Moulin Rouge 2 than F. Scott Fitzgerald).
But if the movie is a complete disaster, the new trailer does a good job of hiding it. Yes, it still looks like Moulin Rouge 2, but this time around, the trailer does a much better job of demonstrating that Moulin Rouge 2 with a touch of Fitzgerald may not be such a bad thing after all.
