When Matt Damon got into a testy exchange with a libertarian reporter at the Save Our Schools rally last year, it was widely determined that Damon handily won the debate—not on the basis of his argument, mind you, but rather on the basis of his haircut. Indeed, with his hair cropped within millimeters of his skull, Damon looked extra-intimidating, and even if he had argued something stupid—like that only dangerous offenders should be considered for teaching positions—Damon still would’ve looked like the clear victor.
Well, now we know the reason behind Damon’s haircut. In Elysium, Neil Blomkamp’s follow-up to District 9, Damon will play a bald ex-con named Max, who at some point in the movie, presumably carries around a massive Chemrail gun that requires the assistance of a robotic arm to operate. Set in the year 2159, Elysium depicts a world in which an elite group of “Coordinators” inhabit a pristine space station while the rest of the population lives in filth and squalor on the Earth below. Jodie Foster will play a hardline government official who is determined to prevent immigrants from boarding the space station. Whether or not Blomkamp will use the plot as an excuse to editorialize on income inequality and illegal immigration remains to be seen.
Elysium hits theatres in March 1, 2013.
