After nearly ruining his career (and getting himself banned for life from the Cannes film festival) with his ill-advised remarks at the 2011 Cannes press conference for Melancholia, Lars von Trier vowed never to talk to the press ever again. Fortunately, Von Trier seems to have found a way to get a ton of free publicity without having to do interviews: Make a movie called The Nymphomaniac, fill it with unsimulated sex scenes, and cast Transformers star Shia LaBeouf.
Here’s the first still image from the film. It shows Charlotte Gainsbourg lying down in an alleyway, presumably after being savagely beaten. It’s at this point that Stellan Skarsgard finds her, takes her back to her apartment, and listens to her discuss her sexual life from birth to the age of 50. She evidently has a lot to discuss: The movie will be four hours long and divided into two parts.
In addition to Gainsgourg, Skarsgard, and LaBeouf, The Nymphomaniac also stars Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe, Jamie Bell, Christian Slater, and Connie Nielsen.
