Whenever Daniel Day-Lewis appears in a new movie (which usually happens once every five years), he can be relied upon to radically alter his appearance, voice, and mannerisms (which is probably why it takes him five years between movies). Above, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, we have the first official still image of Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln from Steven Spielberg’s upcoming adaptation of Team of Rivals. Not surprisingly, Day-Lewis looks a lot like the late president. What will be surprising is to hear what voice he comes up with. In Gangs of New York and There Will Be Blood, Day-Lewis came up with two of the oddest, most memorable accents ever used in a major motion picture—accents which were completely at odds with everyone else in the cast. If Day-Lewis was able to dig up a rare recording of someone from Illinois circa the Civil War (just as he based his character’s voice in Gangs off a rare recording of Walt Whitman), there’s good reason to believe that Lincoln will bring his Trilogy of Memorable Voices to a masterful finish.

Lincoln hits theatres (no pun intended) Nov. 9.
